Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of the arts by her aunt Denise when she was a kid. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, allowed her to explore art and literature as well as the theater in the daylight. DuVernay immediately was captivated with an old 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay discovered through experience the art of being a good vehicle for activism. DuVernay grew up with a mother who was socially aware and taught her to use art as a method of expressing herself. DuVernay was raised together with her parents in Compton, spent each summer at Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. DuVernay's dad recalled the Civil Rights marches that occurred across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the nearby town of Selma, Alabama. DuVernay would use her summers in Alabama as inspiration for her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. In 1990, she was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. DuVernay started broadcasting journalism as a student. Her first job was as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to look over the rubbish at the home of one of jury. Her work left her dissatisfied in journalism, so she decided to move towards the field of publicity. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a junior publicist immediately after graduation. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. Additionally, she started a variety of lifestyle and promotional networks, including Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective.
